On August 11, 2026, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced the launch of a comprehensive environmental sustainability program aimed at enhancing the ecological standards of football stadiums across Brazil. This initiative underscores the CBF’s commitment to integrating sustainable practices within the nation’s most beloved sport.

CBF’s New Sustainability Program Targets Stadiums Nationwide

The CBF’s newly unveiled program focuses on implementing sustainable practices in stadiums throughout Brazil. Key components include:

  • Reducing energy consumption through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and practices.
  • Managing water resources efficiently by implementing water-saving fixtures and systems.
  • Promoting waste recycling by establishing comprehensive waste management programs.
  • Adopting renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to supply stadium operations.
  • Incorporating green building materials in stadium construction and renovation projects to minimize environmental impact.

This program is designed to align with global environmental standards and contribute to the broader goal of sustainable development within the sports industry.

Alignment with FIFA’s Green Goal™ Initiative

This initiative aligns with FIFA’s Green Goal™ program, which aims to minimize the environmental impact of football events. FIFA’s Green Goal™ focuses on:

  • Reducing potable water consumption by implementing efficient water management systems.
  • Minimizing waste through comprehensive recycling and composting programs.
  • Creating efficient energy systems to lower energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Increasing the use of public transport to events to reduce the carbon footprint associated with fan travel.

By adopting similar objectives, the CBF demonstrates its dedication to global environmental standards in sports.

Building on the Legacy of Copa Verde

The CBF’s commitment to sustainability is not new. Since 2014, the organization has been involved in the Copa Verde (“Green Cup”), an annual football competition played by 24 teams from Brazil’s North and Midwest regions. The Copa Verde has been committed to sustainable practices and environmental preservation, turning football into an educational tool for sustainability. The competition fosters environmental awareness among fans through activities such as recycling materials. In 2016, a total of 1,951 kg (about 14,000 lb) of plastic bottles were exchanged for 13,000 tickets, with the waste sent to recycling cooperatives.

Inspiration from Arena MRV’s Environmental Measures

The CBF’s program draws inspiration from successful examples like Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte. Opened in April 2023, Arena MRV incorporated several environmental measures during its construction. The stadium’s environmental license required the establishment of bike paths connecting the arena to the Eldorado Metro Station and the creation of a program to protect the capetinho-do-oco-de-pau, a bird at risk of extinction. Additionally, the club committed to land conservation efforts in the Serra do Gandarela National Park, compensating for the native vegetation affected by the stadium’s construction.

Granja Comary’s Role in Promoting Sustainability

The CBF’s headquarters and main training center, Granja Comary, located in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, serves as a model for integrating sustainability into football infrastructure. Opened in 1987, Granja Comary has been the training ground for the Brazil national football team and exemplifies the potential for combining sports facilities with environmental stewardship.

Future Implications for Brazilian Football

The CBF’s new sustainability program is expected to set a precedent for football organizations worldwide. By integrating environmental considerations into the core of football operations, the CBF aims to inspire clubs, players, and fans to adopt more sustainable practices, ensuring that the sport contributes positively to environmental conservation efforts.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition within the sports community of the importance of environmental responsibility and the role that major organizations can play in promoting sustainable development.
